LA GRANDE DUCHESSE DE GEROLSTEIN

A contrast of worlds

Jacques Offenbach’s work was always very much linked to the actuality of his time. In bringing back his La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein for the bicentennial celebrations in his native city of Köln we wish to continue in his tradition of satirical approach towards contemporary audiences.

In 1867 La Grande Duchesse was a caricature of the little kingdoms & « armées d ‘opérette » of the time. The recent events show us a very different idea about the army and in today’s world war is no laughing matter.

For this production we decided to highlight today’s social conflicts in between 2 ideas & ideals in a world where people feel the urgent need to take their own destiny in hand.

Heiress of a large family of industrialists la Grande Duchesse is taking the cause of saving an endangered frog. She is supporting the "Zadist movement" occupying the wet land against the realtors wanting to build a shopping mall on that location. This new army of anti-capitalist activists are using the occupied area to develop political & social projects. Fritz & Wanda are 2 representatives of this philosophy. Boum, Puck, & Nepomuc are a lawyer, accountant & administrator hiding in disguise to protect their own interest & influence on the assets of La Grande Duchesse. In their mind this ecologist fight is the distraction that she needs to fill the boredom of her pampered life while they keep ruling her business. They try to have the Gerolstein company merge with the Paul bakeries. The aging Grande Duchesse in great need of seduction enjoys the company those men of nature fighting for their ideals. Back in her estate she eagerly awaits the return of Fritz who disappoint her plans by wanting to marry Wanda. In a fearced rage she wants him eliminated.

Being a Bobo is sometimes complicated as both worlds often collide. Her reactionary neighbors and relations surrounding her are mostly opposing political and social progress and reforms.

In a Ubu comical & light approach we make fun of our society where ideals are easily thrown overboard when they distract the comfort of our everyday life.
