LA CENERENTOLA
by Gioachino Rossini at the Latvian National Opera / Opéra national du Capitole

" In Rossini’s opera La Cenerentola, the well-known Cinderella tale has been transformed into a merry drama for adults. Doucet & Barbe, the creative team of the production, has transferred the story to the 1930s New York cabaret atmosphere and it works from beginning to end..."

New York - 1930s

"Ramiro will inherit from his recently deceased father the King’s Follies theater but to do so he has to get married. This theater was considered one of the most prestigious revue in New-York City but the style is now dated and the18th Century Little Marquises tableau is not anymore a box office success. Alidoro, Ramiro’s legal advisor, tells him that he should consider a daughter of Don Magnifico, the owner of the Button Club, a rundown burlesque show in the little Italy.

Angelina (Cenerentola) is taking care of her sisters and the other ladies performing at the club but her dream is to design costumes and sets. Her creative vision is going to help transform the production of the King’s Follies into a smashing modern hit and with Ramiro they become a winning pair embraced by the press."
